Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida) is a flowering tree species in the family Cornaceae that blooms in April in Missouri, displaying white and pink bracts which are leaves. The green-yellow clusters at the center are the Dogwood flowers. The fruits (berries) are bright red and oval-shaped. Cornus florida was named the official state tree of Missouri in 1955. It is found naturally on wooded slopes, ravines, ridges, forest edges, and old fields. Most commonly, this dogwood is found in the Ozarks or in the eastern part of Missouri. Earlier names of the dogwood were whipple-tree and dog-tree, likely because dogs were washed with an extract of the bark.
The beautiful blossoms of a Flowering Dogwood tree were photographed in the Tower Grove Park, in St. Louis, Missouri on 4-22-2021. I used a Nikon D850 camera body and a Nikkor 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR telephoto lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/3200 sec, f/5.6, ISO 2200. Tower Grove Park covers 289 acres and was built in 1889.
