Description
A view of Kansas City, Missouri from the Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport in October 2015.
The Kansas City Downtown Airport was dedicated as "Kansas City Municipal Airport" by Charles Lindbergh on August 17, 1927. The airport flourished during the early days of commercial flight serving many airlines and as the headquarters for Trans World Airlines. By the 1960s, the Municipal Airport could no longer handle the larger commercial planes and increased jet and passenger traffic.
Airplanes had to avoid the hills and buildings of the downtown Kansas City skyline south of the main runway. In the early 1960s an FAA memo called it "the most dangerous major airport in the country" and urged that no further federal funds be spent on it.
A new and much larger airport known as the Kansas City International Airport was opened in 1972 north-west of downtown.
Despite concerns about the airport being unsafe, the downtown airport still one of the busiest in the KC area. In the shadows of the citys skyline, up to 700 aircraft per day take off or land at the airport - everything from single-engine propeller craft to sleek corporate jets. Due to its proximity to the downtown area Air Force One frequently uses it during Presidential visits to this day.
The Kansas City Downtown Airport was rededicated as Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport on the airport's 75th anniversary in August 2002.
The Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport is also home to the National Airline History Museum. Though the museum primarily contains artifacts from TWA (due to most of its volunteers are local retired TWA employees), the museum is dedicated to airline history in general.
